Removing the burner account function removes the hundreds of comments that generate thousands of page views that generate Gawker income. It's as if Gawker is saying "we'll allow you the ability to post rape and gore because we get dolla dolla bills, ya'll."

I also don't visit Jezebel, but do read the comments on Gawker posts sometimes. I've seen random-ass graphic images a few times. Didn't know it was like an over-arching problem though.

Apparently the images aren't only being posted by burners.

I think they could use a 'Flag Post' button.

When i got to the bit where they explained they had just gotten their first check for $7,600, I happened to glance to the left where I learned of Gawker media's frustration with this rape-gif-barrage.

Realistic reason:
Some people can't access the other sign-in providers (Google, FB, Twitter) while at work, so some established Oppo authors have burner accounts that they use while at work.

Actual reason:
Denton wanted someone to be able to contact Gawker Media anonymously in order to get "Teh Big Scoopz!!!!11!1!!!one!" hence we have burners.

They demonstrate unique visitors to advertisers, who pay Gawker Media for the privilege of hosting advertisements on the story pages, where it's the annoying pop-up kind or sidebar kind or embedded types that pull data from you while you visit.

Example: Gawker tells Amazon that they get (on average) 35,000 unique visitors to each story. For Amazon, this means that if their advertisement is up on a Gawker page then they could potentially have 35,000 people view their ad, and from that 35,000 a percentage will click the link and use Amazon services and generate revenue for Amazon. Amazon then pays Gawker Media $X.XX per page view for placing their advertisement on their page.

Going about my business, and noticed the headline about the rape GIF problem in the banner and clicked to see what the hell was going on. Had no idea whatsoever, the Jalopnik side of the Gawkerverse just gets those get rich quick scams.
